During the manufacturing process, the DMC Pearl Cotton is combed, singed by flame and then double mercerised.  It is this double mercerising which gives it its beautiful pearlised sheen. The thread is soft, silky, and does not fluff or kink.

The size numbers in pearl cotton refers to the metres per gram, so No 3 = 3 metres per gram whilst No  5 = 5 metres per gram.  No 3 = the thickest thread, whereas n° 12 is the finest size.
